Colleeen Olphie

Colleen E. Olphie-Lippmann’s interest in helping others to heal came out of the desire to heal herself.  After years of chronic health problems Colleen was directed to an acupuncturist for help. Although skeptical at the prospect of acupuncture helping to relieve her pain, Colleen was pleasantly surprised that not only did the treatments heal her pain, remove her asthma and leave her completely healthy…it also categorically changed her life.  Within 6 months of her first treatment, Colleen was paving her way to become an acupuncturist.

Still needing to finish her Bachelors Degree, Colleen aimed high and was accepted to Smith College where she studied Medical Anthropology and Fine Art. After finishing at Smith, Colleen wanted to make sure that the path to becoming an acupuncturist was indeed her calling. With nothing but a backpack she hopped a plane and landed in Northern Spain where she spent 5 weeks walking 500 miles of The Camino De Santiago, a spiritual pilgrimage that solidified her life’s plan. Colleen obtained her Master’s of Acupuncture at the Academy for Five Element Acupuncture and has been in private practice for 5 years. Colleen cannot believe that she gets to make a career out of something she loves. “Acupuncture made me be the person I was always meant to be and now I can help others to become what they were meant to be too.”

About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a holistic, wellness-based medical procedure that has been in practice for more than 2,500 years.  Both preventative and palliative, anyone can benefit from acupuncture - even those whose problems resist modern medical methods or when there is no specific diagnosis.

Acupuncture is one of the key components of the system of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).  In the TCM system of medicine, the body is seen as a delicate balance of two opposing and inseparable forces: yin and yang.  Yin represents the cold, slow, or passive principle, while yang represents the hot, excited, or active principle.  Among the major assumptions in TCM are that health is achieved by maintaining the body in a "balanced state" and that disease is due to an internal imbalance of yin and yang.  This imbalance leads to blockage in the flow of qi (vital energy) along pathways known as meridians.  It is believed that there are 12 main meridians and 8 secondary meridians and that there are more than 2,000 acupuncture points on the human body that connect with them.  Treatment involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles.  The needles are tiny in diameter, just a little larger than a cat whisker.  The sensation caused by an acupuncture needle varies.  Some people feel a little pain as a needles are inserted, but many people feel no pain at all.

Five Element Acupuncture works by looking at the person as a whole as well as their symptoms.  It gives special attention to the root causes of imbalances and disease.  The Five Element practitioner places great importance on bringing the Five Elements into balance, thereby curing the root causes as well as the symptoms.

How Acupuncture Can Help

Acupuncture is a wellness based practice that has been in use for more than 2,500 years.  It is a safe, gentle drug-free therapy that can be used to heal disease and imbalances in the body.  Acupuncture treats individuals holistically: it focuses on all aspects of a person's body, mind and spirit to achieve the individual's highest potential for health.

Acupuncture has a long history of use for prevention of disease in individuals who wish to maintain their wellness.  Many illnesses from colds to cancer, can be prevented with periodic acupuncture treatments, and prevention remains a major use of acupuncture today.   Classical Five Element Acupuncture more specifically can also help with the healing of emotional traumas or stresses including; divorce, PTSD, and the loss of a loved one.
